Helmbold & Stewart had its beginnings in 1868 and operated throughout the years as the James Kerr Agency, Kerr & Biddle, Kerr, Biddle & Helmbold, and finally Helmbold & Stewart by 1901. In 1967, John F. Bellmore and Robert K. Norris purchased the agency and tripled its size over the next 30 years. In 1997, Mr. Bellmore's children, Deborah Bellmore-West and Jeffrey D. Bellmore became and still are, the owners of the agency. The agency has doubled in size over the last 10 years, making it one of the largest agencies in the Clearfield-Jefferson county area. In 2004 the company purchased the HeiligMyers property at 12 South Third Street in Clearfield, razed the property and constructed a 5,000 square foot office building. Satellite locations, in Curwensville and Philipsburg were closed and consolidated into the Clearfield location.
Helmbold & Stewart is a member of the Keystone Insurers Group, one of the largest affiliations of locally owned, independent agencies in the country with 95 locations in Pennsylvania and spread across 5 other states. H&S continues to offer all types of business, home, auto, life, health insurance, employee benefits, specialty workers compensation programs, safety and risk management services.
In 2009, expansion continues with the creation of Unified Employer Solutions, an affiliate company of H&S, formed by three employees of H&S. The company was formed in response to the urgent need of employers to control rising employee-related costs in the areas of Workers Compensation, Group Health and Human Resources. UES provides Risk Management and Safety consulting along with Group Benefits and Human Resource Consulting. A specialty Workers Compensation Unit continues to bring additional solutions for employers to control costs, including Claims Management services.
